Actually I saw him live in 79 at magic convention, and he charmed the hell out of everyone.Yes Vernon was the man,but Slydini was in his own league. My girlfriend at the time felt he was the only real magician she had ever seen.
I have his books and I know exactly how he does it. But knowing what he is doing and catching him doing it are two different things. He is so smooth, you just can’t catch him. His moves are so imperceptible that it seems like real magic.
His style wouldn’t work today, but the technique is still amazing.
There are two great sets of books on Slydini. The first is “The Best of Slydini and more.” The second is “The Magical World of Slydini.” The coins across routine you are referring to is on page 46 of “The Magical World…” However, if you are learning Slydini magic for the first time, I would recommend “The Best of…” as it explains more of the theory and thinking behind his effects. Note that his magic depends a lot on timing and can be quite difficult as a result.
Cloudkill, also, I would recommend that you start with his coins through the table routine that starts with 6 coins (half dollars or silver dollars) and an English penny and then work through the 4 coin routine down to the one coin routine. The one coin routine is amazing.
The big issue with his magic in today’s world is that you have to be sitting to do most of it and most venues for closeup magic lend themselves to having the magician standing.
Why do you say that his style “wouldn’t work” today? Could you elaborate? I only know that I showed my girlfriend this and another Slydini clip I found here on youtube and she acted like she thought it was one of the most entertaining magical performances she’d ever seen. So, again, can you tell me why you think “his style wouldn’t work today”?
There is more emphasis on the overall “entertainment experience” today. Slydini was amazing, but his “I am going to fool you, you can’t catch me” style I think would be a turn off for most modern audiences. You have to be entertaining, tell a story and have some humor these days. Slydini had none of that. He was very direct. i am going to fool you, here is my trick. No story, just a trick. Most people don’t want that kind of dry straight forward presentation sytle.
Okay, thanks for the explanation. You’re entitled to your opinion, of course, but I trend to strongly disagree. I believe Slydini “got away” with performing as he did then, and would now as well, was he still alive, simply BECAUSE he was Slydini, and had the personality to “pull it off”. Conversely, MOST magicians wouldn’t have “gotten away with” that style then either. I don’t think he was “dry” at all, but had a very entertaining — and unique — style. And THAT’s what “makes” a performer.
He is the best, I studied with the Man, he would be working the same act if he was here.Slydini is the kind of Artist that would Always be working. Now Then a thousand years from now. You youngins have so much to learn.
I am a coin guy…and the coin trick was awesome but I just don’t understand card tricks in my opinion they are boring to do and boring to see….sorry for any guys obsessed with cards….go coins!!!!!
Did your grandmother ever meet Quintino Marucci?
Do you think she would have liked him if she had?

smoooooooth
how?-how how how does this 6 coin trick work, I would pay 50 dollars to know!!!!
Slydini was INSANELY entertaining. His tricks DID have stories and his wit was subtle and brilliant.
50 bucks? He spent a life time developing his skill. 50 bucks and he’d tell ya to go screw yourself.
Have a nice day though…..
TOTALLY ENTERTAINING!!

He is what most magicians aren’t really anymore, REAL. Most magicians use gimmick cards, staged tricks, ECT… He was all skill.
niceee
So what does David Blaine do then? There is no story or entertainment with him. Same with Criss Angel and that Cyril guy. Just a thought

Masterful
helicopter is masterpiece but in my opinion, the knocking on the table to do the change is an unnatural move
